A walk in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park has been described as one of the best short walks in Wales, offering cliff views and waterfalls. The route, shared on social media by Dan Butler, is around 3-4km and includes Dinas Rock and a three-tiered waterfall.
Route details and highlights
Butler said: “This might be one of the best short walks in South Wales. Sychryd Waterfall is only around 3-4km to walk, and there's loads packed into it.” Walkers start by going up past Dinas Rock, then descend into the gorge and follow the river towards the waterfall, passing old silica mines along the way. When water levels are right, there are spots for swimming.
Accessibility and quieter alternative
The walk is suitable for all fitness levels, with an accessible path for wheelchair users starting at the Dinas Rock car park. The path follows a stone dust footpath alongside the river to the waterfall. Sychryd Waterfall is also said to be one of the quieter waterfalls in Wales’ waterfall country, making it a choice for those wanting to avoid crowds.
A post on the Oh What A Knight travel blog reads: “Hidden away in the Sychryd gorge is a small secluded set of falls traversed by a wooden footbridge. This isn’t the biggest or most impressive set of falls in Brecon Beacon waterfall country, but its secluded nature, fairytale-esque surroundings, and lack of other visitors make it a perfect waterfall to visit if you’re looking to escape the crowds.”
Visitor feedback and longer option
Commenters on Butler’s video and online reviewers shared similar opinions. One person said: “Literally went there for the first time recently and need to go again.” A Tripadvisor reviewer commented: “Beautiful views on the yellow trail taking you to the Four Waterfalls. The trail is of moderate difficulty, but I've seen all kinds of ages and fitness levels on the path. Very popular among families and dog walkers. You'll find plenty of rocks to climb on, too.”
For those seeking a longer challenge, Sychryd Waterfall is a starting point for the Four Waterfalls walk, which includes Sgwd Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn, Sgwd y Pannwr, and Sgwd yr Eira. This full walk takes around three to four hours and is about 9km in length.
