Bamburgh, a quiet village on Northumberland's coastline, has been named Britain's best seaside holiday spot for 2026, according to a national consumer ranking. The travel team at Ski Vertigo reviewed the latest national consumer survey, and the strongest reader takeaway came out as the Northumberland village, with Cornwall only gaining one spot.
Top destination score
The picturesque village achieved an impressive destination score of 84%, and visitors rewarded it with five stars for its scenery, beach and seafront, as well as an honourable mention for its sense of "peace and quiet". Thousands of participants in the survey rated beaches, seafronts or piers, food and drink, attractions, scenery, shopping, peace and quiet, parking and value for money, with the overall score reflecting their likelihood to recommend.
Surpassing popular seaside destinations such as St Ives and Brighton, and ranking higher than Cornwall's beloved villages, Bamburgh is emerging as a must-visit destination this year.
The castle and its history
Within this small space by the sea lies a wealth of history, beginning with the vast Bamburgh Castle, a fortification that has dominated the coastline since the Anglo-Saxon era. The current structure has curtain walls, towers and ramparts dating back to the 1500s, when it was reconstructed by Lord Armstrong. Fourteen rooms are open to the public, including the renowned Kings Hall, which contains 3,000 items, from historic artwork to antique furniture, china and porcelain.
Visitors can walk up to the castle from the beach. One visitor described the experience on TripAdvisor as "magnificent", adding: "The location of the castle is amazing. When it lies before you coming from the interior - breathtaking! A magnificent backdrop."
Beaches and visitor reviews
The dramatic castle overlooks the expansive Bamburgh Beach, the heart of the village. With an award-winning stretch of clean, golden sand and rolling grassy dunes, alongside clifftop views from the castle, it offers a natural paradise. From the shoreline, there are sweeping views of the North Sea, the Farne Islands, and Lindisfarne, making it a popular spot for photography.
To reach the beach, visitors must trail along uneven and sandy paths through the dunes, with nearby parking available at a fee within the Links car park. While there are no amenities on the beach itself, it sits within close walking distance to the village, with shops, cafes and toilet facilities.
Visitors have dubbed it a "must-visit" coastal spot, while others praise its dog-friendly feature all year round. One review reads: "This is probably one of the most amazing beaches I’ve been to. The beach goes on for miles and is crowned by the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. The beach is lovely fine white sand, and there are no restrictions on dogs. My girl just absolutely loved charging about and burning up some energy."
Away from the hustle and bustle of famed seaside towns, Bamburgh offers a natural and authentic feel, far less frequented by tourists.
