A secluded stretch of Welsh coastline at Monknash offers unspoilt rocky shores, a woodland walk and a historic pub en route. The reward for the effort is undeniable, according to What's On Editor Kathryn Williams.
To reach the spot, visitors follow a footpath tracing the Nash Brook stream through woodland. Before entering the trees, they can leave their vehicle near the Plough and Harrow pub or use a neighbouring farmer's field via an honesty box arrangement, then walk along the country lane.
The off-the-beaten-path trek might deter families with small children, but when the beach reveals itself against its clifftop setting, the additional exertion proves worthwhile.
Part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast
Forming part of the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, the location presents expansive golden sands at low tide, with rocky outcrops and tidal pools enhancing the scenery.
The nearby Plough and Harrow pub is a country inn worth a stop. With origins dating to 1337, local tales recount how the space now occupied by the bar once served as a repository for shipwrecked bodies washed ashore after vessels' captains were deceived by the notorious "Wreckers of Wick".
Parking and access details
For visitors heading to the beach, the closest parking is in a field across from an operational farm, with payment via an honesty box.
From Monknash village, take the country lane passing the Plough and Harrow, and the field is on the left approximately 0.6 miles along (roughly a two-minute drive). It is recommended not to venture further as turning around becomes difficult and a private residence sits at the lane's end.
From the parking area, proceed on foot along the same lane to the very end, where a gate and small wall require crossing. This accesses the footpath leading directly to the beach (approximately a 15-minute walk).
Pub food and opening times
Post-walk, the Plough and Harrow's menu includes classics like pie of the day and fish and chips, as well as curries and vegan and gluten free options.
The bar welcomes guests from 12pm until late, with meals available from 12-4pm Sundays, 12-8pm Saturdays, and on weekdays from 12-2:30pm and 5-8pm.
