Airbnb guest finds hidden room under floorboards

A man staying in an Airbnb got more than he expected when he discovered a hidden room beneath the floorboards. The guest was exploring the property when he noticed a chair in an unusual spot. Moving it aside, he found a red wooden panel concealed under the floorboards.

Discovery of the hidden staircase

Unable to resist, he lifted the hatch to reveal a narrow staircase leading to a closed door below. Sharing a video of the discovery online, he admitted the sight gave him the creeps.

He explained: "I rented an Airbnb and noticed there was a chair sitting over what turned out to be a hidden floor panel. I didn't go down there because it didn't feel right."

Strange noises and unsettling feelings

The following morning, the man claimed things became even stranger. He thought he heard footsteps coming from beneath the floor, though he couldn't be certain what the noise was. He added: "The whole thing just felt really unsettling. What do you think that space is for? And should I go down there because I'm really curious to see what's behind that door?"

Online reactions and theories

The eerie discovery quickly racked up thousands of views, with many comparing it to horror films. One person joked: "Various Evil Dead films, Barbarian and The Cabin in the Woods have taught us that you absolutely should go down there and mess with any books, tape recordings and artefacts you find."

Another shared: "We had a creepy cellar like this at a very old house we rented. The house was built in 1890. So that used to be where they kept 'cold' stuff and jarred stuff and what not. It was still freaky as hell. The internet guy went down there and when he came out spiders were leaping off of him." A third simply asked: "What in the Barbarian did you find yourself in?"

Others were more practical, suggesting the hidden space was likely an old cellar or basement once used for food storage rather than anything sinister.

Safety tips for Airbnb guests

While the man didn't share details on where he was staying, there are safety precautions to take if something like this happens to you:

  • Do not open unknown doors: Many hidden doors may lead to private utility spaces, owner storage or unlisted areas.
  • Verify the listing rules: Check if the host noted extra spaces or locked owner zones in the property description.
  • Report unauthorised access points: If a hidden door opens directly into active living quarters or compromises your privacy, report it to Airbnb immediately.
