The Met Office and Irish counterpart Met Éireann have officially unveiled the list of names that will define the UK and Ireland's storm season for 2024/25. In a powerful and moving initiative, the public was invited to submit names that held deep personal significance, resulting in a roll call that pays tribute to lost loved ones and beloved family pets.
The new season's names include Angie, nominated by a viewer in memory of their mother, and Hank, a touching tribute to a lost father. The list also features more whimsical yet deeply personal choices, such as Ili, named after a grandmother, and Jocelyn, honouring a mother who tirelessly listened to shipping forecasts.
A System That Saves Lives
The storm naming system is a critical tool for the meteorological services. By giving a major weather system a single, recognisable identity, it helps to streamline crucial public safety communications. This ensures severe weather warnings are seen, understood, and acted upon, ultimately helping to protect lives and property across the British Isles.
