Storm Beolo to blast Scotland this weekend with 80mph winds

The Met Office has issued a second weather warning for Scotland as Storm Beolo is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain this weekend, with gusts potentially reaching 80mph and a possible "danger to life".

While parts of south, east and central Scotland are expected to be battered by rain from Storm Austen, the national forecaster has confirmed that Storm Beolo, the second named storm of the year, will hit less than 24 hours later. The yellow wind warning starts at 6pm on Saturday, October 24 and continues until 9pm on Sunday, October 25.

Met Office Warning Details

The Met Office warning states: "Strong westerly winds will spread across northern parts of the UK during Saturday evening. Very windy conditions will persist overnight and through much of Sunday before gradually easing from the southwest later."

Gusts of 55-65 mph are likely widely, with some coastal or exposed areas potentially seeing gusts of 70-80 mph or more. Strong winds will be combined with spells of heavy rain, most frequent over western Scotland, and the forecaster has warned of a "very windy spell" that will likely cause disruption across Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the north of England.

Impacts and Safety Advice

The entirety of Scotland is expected to be blasted in a 27-hour wind storm, with the Met Office warning that there could be injuries and "danger to life" as a result of flying debris. Scots are urged to be safe while travelling, as some buildings could be damaged with tiles blown off roofs in the worst affected areas.

Road, air, rail and ferry services are expected to be impacted, with delays, longer travel times or cancellations possible, and roads and bridges may be closed. Power cuts may also affect households, with the potential for mobile phone coverage to be impacted. Those in coastal areas are urged to stay away from sea fronts as severe gales could result in large waves and beach material being thrown about.

Areas Affected by Storm Beolo

The warning covers Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Clackmannanshire, Dundee, Falkirk, Fife, Perth and Kinross, Stirling), Grampian (Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray), Highlands & Eilean Siar (Na h-Eileanan Siar, Highland), Orkney & Shetland (Orkney Islands), Strathclyde (Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire), and SW Scotland, Lothian Borders (Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Edinburgh, Midlothian Council, Scottish Borders, West Lothian).
