The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for snow and ice across large areas of Scotland, with up to 10cm of snow expected in the western Highlands and Lanarkshire on Wednesday and Thursday. The cold snap is forecast to bring travel disruption, potentially affecting road and rail services, and icy surfaces pose a risk to pedestrians as temperatures drop to -1.6°C overnight.
A cold winter snap will see temperatures plummet across the UK, with strong winds bringing heavy rain, sleet, and snow. Bonnie Diamond from the Met Office stated: 'From tomorrow a much colder air mass will affect the UK, it will be quite breezy too. Scotland will see the lowest temperatures - about 6 to 5 degrees Celsius - but it will feel much colder due to the wind chill factor.'
Low pressure will bring unsettled conditions for days, with December starting off chilly and widespread frost following days of thick fog and mist that marred the end of November. An 11-day flurry of snowfall has been forecast from Thursday, with the Scottish Highlands expected to see the worst of it.
BBC forecaster Stav Danaos added: 'It's going to be cold, turning much colder in the northwest - and that sets the scene really as we head into Thursday and Friday, it'll be very cold indeed. Low pressure with us, bringing spells of heavy rain, strong winds and we'll see increasing amounts of snow to the hills in the north - maybe even down to the lower levels at times too.'
The yellow weather warning will last until Thursday. Other parts of the UK will see a mix of conditions, with eastern England experiencing a few showers and breezy weather, while western and northern areas will cloud over with some light rain. Clear spells in the south and east will bring frost and patchy fog, and a band of rain will move southeast across Scotland and Northern Ireland.
