Fresh snowfall is predicted to hit parts of the UK this week, with new weather maps indicating a return to wintry conditions for 15 counties. This comes despite a general rise in temperatures across much of the country following the intense cold snap and the aftermath of Storm Goretti.
Where and When the Snow Will Strike
According to the latest data from WXCharts, the new bout of snow is forecast to begin on Thursday evening, 15th January 2026. The primary impact will be felt across Scotland and Northern Ireland, while England and Wales are expected to be spared further snowfall.
Twelve Scottish counties, stretching from Inverness-shire in the north to Ayrshire in the south, are in the firing line. The snowfall is anticipated to be light for most, at around 1mm per hour or less, creating a delicate dusting. However, heavier conditions are forecast for areas including Midlothian and West Lothian.
In Northern Ireland, County Antrim and County Down could also see a fresh covering of snow based on the latest projections. The maps show snow continuing to lie across much of the Scottish Highlands, with additional accumulation expected.
Milder Temperatures Bring New Risks
The Met Office states that Thursday will see "wet and windy weather pushing northeastwards," followed by "blustery showers on Friday" with temperatures "milder in the south." This shift brings a different set of hazards.
Officials have warned that the combination of heavy rain and a rapid thaw of existing snow and ice could lead to flooding in some areas. This is a particular concern in the north of the UK, where significant snow accumulated during the recent fierce cold spell.
This follows a period of extreme weather which saw Storm Goretti batter the UK, triggering a rare red weather warning for "dangerous, stormy" wind with gusts of up to 100mph in the South West.
