Richard Madeley was told to stop filming during a visit to the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (CECOT), an enormous maximum security prison in El Salvador, for a new Channel 5 documentary. The 70-year-old presenter was interviewing staff about conditions in the facility when a woman intervened and ordered the crew to cease recording.
In a clip shared with the Mirror, Madeley asked about living standards and was met with an aggressive response. A guard replied in Spanish that the culture was different in the UK and that he did not understand why the prison could be interpreted as cruel. The interview was quickly shut down, and Madeley later said in a voiceover that he felt he may have 'overstepped the mark'.
The documentary, titled 'Richard Madeley: Inside the World's Mega Prison', sees the presenter enter the controversial facility where inmates spend 23 and a half hours a day in concrete cells. More than 80 prisoners sleep in metal bunks stacked four high, are stripped to boxer shorts with shaved heads, and have lights on 24 hours a day. There are no family visits, recreational spaces, or rehabilitation programmes.
Madeley also witnesses the punishments doled out and speaks to the Prison Governor. He called what he saw 'profoundly shocking' and explored an old execution wall filled with bullet holes. The documentary claims that 2% of El Salvador's population is behind bars and questions whether such an ultra-tough approach could ever be acceptable in the UK.
