UK Weather: Sunny Weekend Ahead After Snow and Wind Warnings
UK Weather: Sunny Weekend After Snow and Wind Warnings

The United Kingdom is set to experience a milder weekend with periods of sunshine and scattered showers, according to the latest forecasts from the Met Office. This comes after a tumultuous week marked by multiple yellow weather warnings for snow, ice, and gale-force winds that disrupted travel and posed safety risks across various regions.

Recent Weather Warnings and Impacts

A snow and ice yellow weather warning remained active until 9am on Friday across parts of Scotland, with predictions of 2 to 5cm of snowfall in areas like Aberdeenshire and the Highlands. On higher ground, accumulations could reach up to 10cm, leading to hazardous conditions on roads and pathways. The Met Office cautioned that these conditions might result in travel delays and potential injuries from slippery surfaces.

Temperature Drops and Wind Chill

On Friday, temperatures dipped across the rest of the UK, with peaks of only 7 to 9°C, slightly below the averages experienced in recent days. Blustery winds exacerbated the chill, making it feel more like 1 to 5°C in many areas. Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin noted, "It is still quite breezy, not as windy as yesterday, but we're in the colder air, so that breeze is really bringing something of a chill. Even in the sunshine, temperatures are below average, 8 to 9°C at the very best."

He added that temperatures could drop further when showers occur, and combined with the breeze, it might feel as low as 2-3°C, emphasizing the need for warm clothing and caution outdoors.

Weekend Forecast Breakdown

For the remainder of the weekend, England and Wales can expect dry and bright spells, offering some respite from the recent severe weather. In contrast, Northern Ireland and western Scotland are likely to see showery conditions, with temperatures remaining around or slightly below average. Mr. Deakin mentioned, "Many places staying in single figures, but perhaps 10 or 11°C across the south. A little bit higher, but the winds will be that much lighter on Saturday compared to today."

Sunday Outlook and Previous Gale-Force Winds

More cloud cover and outbreaks of rain are anticipated on Sunday, particularly in northern and western regions. This follows yellow wind warnings on Thursday that brought gale-force winds of up to 70mph across Scotland, northern England, the Midlands, Wales, and Yorkshire. These strong winds marked a significant shift from the otherwise mild March weather, which had seen the hottest day of the year so far on the previous Thursday, with temperatures reaching 19.2°C in Northolt, London.
