UK Weather: Sunny Spells Continue Through Weekend with Warm Temperatures

The United Kingdom is set to enjoy continued sunny spells and warmer-than-average weather through the upcoming weekend, following Wednesday's record-breaking temperatures that marked the hottest day of the year so far. While temperatures are not expected to reach Wednesday's peak again, pleasant conditions with highs in the mid-to-high teens are forecast across most regions.

Record-Breaking Wednesday and Weekend Outlook

Wednesday, 18 March 2026, saw the UK experience its warmest day of the year to date, with temperatures reaching a notable 20.9°C in Gogerddan near Aberystwyth and 20.2°C at Northolt in London. This surge in warmth comes after a period of colder Arctic air that had previously pushed temperatures down across the country.

According to the Met Office, although temperatures are not forecast to hit 20°C again this weekend, warm weather in the mid-to-high teens is still expected to prevail. On Thursday, temperatures are set to reach 17°C in both London and Manchester, dropping slightly to highs of 15°C on Friday, which coincides with the spring equinox.

Met Office Forecast Details

The Met Office has provided a detailed outlook for the weekend, indicating that Saturday will see highs of 16°C in Manchester, while Sunday will bring temperatures reaching up to 14°C across most of England. These conditions represent a significant departure from the colder spells experienced earlier in the week.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge explained that the higher temperatures are due to warm air being drawn up from further south in Europe. He remarked, "We get this a lot at this time of year; we sometimes joke the warmest day of the year klaxon is going off every day. I think this will be the peak for a while today, we are not expecting any further records in the next week or so." Madge added that Wednesday's values would likely serve as a high watermark for some time to come.

Regional Variations and Weather Patterns

The weather forecast for the week highlights some regional variations. Today, northern England and southern Scotland may experience cloudy and cool conditions with occasional light drizzle, while sunnier skies are expected across England and Wales. Tonight, southeast Scotland and northeast England will see cloudy conditions, especially near coasts, with clear spells elsewhere bringing a chilly night and potential mist or fog patches.

Friday is predicted to start with early mist or fog clearing into a fine, warm day with light winds and sunshine for most areas. However, the far north and northwest may turn cloudier and breezier later with patchy rain. The outlook for Saturday to Monday indicates a mostly sunny and dry start to the weekend for many, with bands of rain moving southeast from Scotland later, followed by colder, showery, and windy conditions in the north into Monday.

This period of warm and sunny weather offers a welcome respite from the colder conditions and aligns with the seasonal transition into spring, providing opportunities for outdoor activities across the UK.
