UK Weather Alert: Hail and Thunder Forecast for Thursday Across Multiple Regions
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for Thursday, indicating that several areas of the United Kingdom could experience hail and thunder as part of a changeable weather pattern. This unsettled period is expected to persist before conditions gradually improve over the weekend, bringing drier and brighter weather.
Detailed Forecast for Thursday
According to the national weather service, Thursday will be characterised by a mix of sunny spells and showers, with the north of the country bearing the brunt of the activity. Showers are predicted to be most frequent and intense in northwestern regions, where there is a significant risk of hail and thunder. Despite the precipitation, temperatures will remain mild, and it may feel warm during sunny intervals.
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin described Thursday as a "showery day" particularly affecting Scotland, especially the west, and parts of northern England. Another weather system is likely to bring outbreaks of rain, starting in Wales by the afternoon and then spreading to Northern Ireland, western England, and much of Scotland by evening.
Regional Variations and Weekend Outlook
In contrast, much of East Anglia and the southeast are anticipated to stay dry and bright for the majority of the day. The Met Office forecasts that outbreaks of rain will move slowly eastwards through Friday and into early Saturday. Subsequently, high pressure is expected to build, ushering in a drier and brighter weekend for most of the UK.
Looking further ahead, from April 20 to April 29, the outlook suggests that high pressure to the north or northeast will bring plenty of dry weather and sunny spells for most areas. However, low pressure in the Atlantic may attempt to push weather fronts towards the UK from the southwest, though these could remain slow-moving. Eastern coastal areas might experience chilly conditions with low cloud and onshore breezes, while western regions are likely to feel quite warm, especially in sunnier spots.
Broader Weather Context
This forecast comes as much of Europe, particularly Italy and the Balkans, has been impacted by stormy weather in recent days. According to BBC Weather, the frontal system affecting these regions is expected to move steadily southwards, leading to improving conditions there by Thursday. The BBC forecast for the UK aligns with the Met Office predictions, noting variable cloud and showers, more frequent in the northwest, with cloud building in the south and far west later in the day.
From next weekend into the following week, there are indications that more unsettled weather could return temporarily, bringing rain or showers to some parts of the UK. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather warnings and prepare for potential disruptions due to hail and thunder on Thursday.
