The first partial solar eclipse in the UK since 1999 is happening today, with the Moon set to obscure around 90% of the Sun for most locations in the country. The sky will go dark above Britain for nearly two hours this evening.
Total eclipse in some European countries
Some European countries, including Iceland and northern Spain, are set for a total eclipse, with the Sun being totally covered by our satellite. In the UK, southern areas including Plymouth and London as well as Cardiff are among those named by the Met Office expected to get a clearer view of the eclipse.
Safety advice and viewing options
No matter where you are located, if you want to look at the eclipse you should use ISO 12312-2 solar glasses, which appear to be widely sold out across the country. If you didn't manage to grab a pair of these special glasses, you can still observe the solar eclipse with a homemade pinhole viewer.
However, if you can't get hold of anything that will allow you to watch the sky spectacle safely or if you want to enjoy it from the comfort of your home, you can follow a live stream with us, which will follow the nearly two-hour-long event from the Royal Observatory Greenwich in London. The live stream will be added at the top of this story at around 6pm.
