An employee at the National Weather Service (NWS) has been terminated following the discovery of an offensive message posted on the organisation's internal Slack channel. The comment, which targeted the city of San Antonio, Texas, prompted swift disciplinary action.
The incident came to light after a screenshot of the message circulated online, drawing widespread criticism. The NWS confirmed the employee's dismissal, stating that such behaviour violates their code of conduct.
Internal Investigation Launched
Sean Murphy, a spokesperson for the NWS, revealed that an internal review was conducted immediately after the incident was reported. "We take these matters very seriously," Murphy said. "The individual involved is no longer with the organisation."
Stephen Smith, another NWS representative, emphasised the agency's commitment to maintaining a respectful workplace. "This kind of language is unacceptable and does not reflect our values," Smith stated.
Public Backlash
Residents of San Antonio expressed anger over the derogatory remark, with many taking to social media to voice their disapproval. Local officials also condemned the comment, calling for accountability.
The NWS has since reiterated its dedication to fostering an inclusive environment and ensuring all communications remain professional.
