Met Office: 13 Areas Face Heavy Rain on Wednesday

Met Office Forecasts Heavy Rain for 13 UK Areas on Wednesday

Parts of the UK are set to be drenched in heavy rain showers on Wednesday, July 1, as Met Office weather maps forecast downpours across 13 areas. The unsettled conditions follow a severe heatwave that saw temperatures soar to 40C in some parts of the country.

According to the latest maps, large parts of Scotland will be the worst impacted by the rainfall. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain, in effect from 12pm to 6pm on Tuesday, with slow-moving showers expected to bring up to 20mm in an hour and possibly 30-40mm in 2-3 hours, leading to localised flooding and travel disruption.

Areas Affected by Heavy Rain on Wednesday

The 13 areas likely to face heavy rain include Glasgow, Inverness, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Dundee, Perth, Fort William, York, Newcastle, Carlisle, Manchester, Leeds, and Liverpool. The Met Office stated: "Cloud and rain across Northern Ireland will spread eastwards into Scotland during the day, with increasingly gusty winds developing. Elsewhere, it will be largely dry, with variable amounts of cloud."

Nick Finnis, a weather expert from Netweather.tv, noted: "A brief ridge of high pressure builds in Wednesday morning following Tuesday's low clearing east from the north, so a sunny and dry day for much of England and Wales, with lighter winds, but wind and rain look to spread in across Scotland and N. Ireland late afternoon into the evening, rain perhaps reaching northern England and Wales too Wednesday night."

Impact and Advice

The Met Office warned that the heaviest showers may be accompanied by thunder, and urged residents in affected areas to be prepared for potential flooding and travel delays. The forecaster added: "Showers will tend to steadily fade through the evening."

Despite the rain in the north, southern areas are expected to remain dry and sunny, with a brief ridge of high pressure bringing settled conditions. However, a cool northwesterly flow is expected to bring further showers to the north later in the week.
