Cyclone Mitchell Intensifies to Category Three, Threatening WA Coast
Cyclone Mitchell is expected to escalate into a severe category three system before making landfall along the Pilbara coast in northern Western Australia on Sunday. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued urgent warnings as the cyclone intensifies offshore, posing significant risks to communities and infrastructure.
Impending Landfall and Path
As of late Saturday morning, Cyclone Mitchell was positioned offshore of Port Hedland, moving south-west towards the coast near Karratha. Authorities anticipate the cyclone will continue on this trajectory, crossing the western Pilbara coast by late Sunday afternoon. It is projected to intensify into a category three system as it passes north of Karratha on Saturday night, tracking closely along the Pilbara coast throughout Sunday.
Severe Weather Warnings
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast very destructive wind gusts reaching up to 170km/h, expected to impact areas including Karratha, Dampier, and Wickham on Saturday night, with Onslow facing similar conditions on Sunday. A watch and act warning is in effect from Whim Creek to Mardie, covering Barrow Island and Montebello Islands, urging residents to prepare for potential threats to lives and homes.
Residents from Pardoo Roadhouse east of Whim Creek, and from south of Mardie to Carnarvon and Pannawonica, are advised to monitor conditions closely and ready themselves for dangerous weather. An evacuation centre has been opened at Karratha Leisureplex from midday Saturday, with individuals instructed to bring essential items like medication and identification, though pets are not permitted.
Flooding and Infrastructure Impacts
Flash flooding is a major concern, with up to 130mm of rain predicted for Port Hedland on Saturday. The central and west Pilbara coast faces a high risk of flash floods throughout the weekend, extending to the west Gascoyne region by Monday. Additionally, abnormally high tides are expected to create serious flood risks for the Karratha area in the early hours of Sunday and near Onslow by Sunday afternoon.
In response to the approaching weather system, several ports have been closed, including Ashburton, Cape Preston West, Dampier, Port Hedland, and Varanus Island, disrupting maritime activities and supply chains.
Broader Regional Impacts
The cyclone's arrival coincides with ongoing flooding in other outback areas. In the Northern Territory, over 400 people evacuated from Daly River to Darwin may face delays in returning home, as riverine flooding is not expected to peak until early next week. Incident controller Superintendent David Moore reported that 298 evacuees, including 110 children, are currently housed at the Foskey Pavilion at the Darwin Showgrounds.
As Cyclone Mitchell approaches, authorities emphasize the importance of heeding warnings and preparing for severe conditions to ensure community safety across affected regions.
