The scorching heatwave is expected to break more UK temperature records today, but weather models suggest the mercury could soon plummet below 10C for millions of Brits. Yesterday was the hottest June day in British history as 36.1C was recorded in Hampshire, breaking a record that had lasted for 50 years. However, with temperatures expected to rise to at least 38C today, that record will likely be broken again within hours. Today should also be the hottest of the year so far.
Met Office Warnings and Cooling Trend
Amber and red Met Office warnings remain in place today, tomorrow and Saturday across vast swathes of England and Wales. Temperatures are then expected to cool off on Sunday, and could drop into the single digits on Monday, according to the GFS weather model. The GFS maps show temperatures plunging as low as 5C in parts of Scotland on Monday morning. Temperatures could drop below 10C in most of Wales and Northern Ireland too, as well as in northern England and the south-west.

Temperature anomaly maps also show a significant drop off on Monday morning. Areas of blue show where temperatures are expected to fall well below the seasonal average. In total, the data shows 54 counties could drop below 10C on Monday morning.

Met Office Forecast for Next Week
The Met Office expects rain, showers and possibly some thundery outbreaks from Monday. Its forecast for June 29 to July 8 states: “Fairly changeable conditions at first with periods of rain and showers, and there could be some thundery outbreaks at times. The best of the drier and brighter weather initially will be across the southeast. Then perhaps a drier start to July for many, although the northwest may still see some rain at times, and perhaps accompanied by some strong winds. Temperatures remain widely above average, and there remains a chance of some very warm or hot weather returning, mainly across the south.”
