Britain is bracing for a scorching heatwave later this month, with temperatures expected to soar to 34C in some parts of the country, making it hotter than Barbados. Weather maps from Netweather indicate that June 20 will see a widespread heat blast, with at least 17 areas in England topping 30C.
Southern and eastern England are predicted to be the hottest, with temperatures ranging from 31C to 34C. The Midlands, including Birmingham, Leicester, Nottingham, and Lincolnshire, are also set to swelter in the high 20s to low 30s. Northern England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland will see slightly cooler but still warm conditions.
The Met Office, in its summer outlook published on June 1, has warned of an increased likelihood of warmer-than-average conditions and a higher chance of heatwaves and heat-related impacts. MeteoGroup, which provides data for BBC Weather, also forecasts multiple intense hot spells and 'significant bursts' of heat across the UK and mainland Europe.
According to the Met Office, warmer summers are becoming more probable due to climate trends, with hotter-than-average conditions now roughly twice as likely as during the 1991-2020 reference period.
