The Met Office has issued extreme heat warnings as a 'heat dome' brings potentially record-breaking temperatures to the UK this week. Forecasts suggest the mercury could reach 36C in parts of the south Midlands on Tuesday, which would surpass the current UK June temperature record of 35.6C set in 1976. The Met Office warns of even hotter conditions over the next three days, likely to break local records across the country.
Historic records under threat
Data from Meteostat reveals that for 22 weather stations, the current June temperature record has stood for half a century since the summer of 1976. However, nearly half of the 160 stations listed set their June record during the 2020s, highlighting the warming climate. The full list of June temperature records by region is provided below.
