The mercury is set to climb to 30°C today as a heatwave envelops large swathes of Britain. The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for extreme heat, in effect from Sunday to Monday, which could pose a danger to life or cause serious illness. Road closures and travel disruptions are also possible.
Temperatures will drop slightly for some midweek, offering a reprieve, before rising again over the weekend. The South East may experience a week-long prolonged heatwave. The Met Office defines a heatwave as meeting a specific temperature threshold for three or more consecutive days.
Sunday could see the UK record its hottest ever day, according to the Met Office. In response, government ministers are reportedly drawing up the first-ever heatwave emergency response. The amber warning covers the East Midlands, East of England, London, South East, North East, North West, South West, Wales, West Midlands, and Yorkshire and Humber.
Today will be largely cloudy with hazy sunshine and a maximum of 30°C. Wednesday will be dry with sunny spells and a high of 26°C. Thursday and Friday will see bright spells but cooler temperatures, while Saturday will bring dry and hot conditions as high pressure builds.
