The Met Office has advised UK households to close their curtains on Wednesday as temperatures could soar to 34C. An amber health alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency as the country braces for its fourth heatwave of the year.
Temperature forecast
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Gregory Wolverson warned: “By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday.”
Keeping cool indoors
The Met Office recommends closing curtains in rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler. It also advises closing doors and windows during the heat of the day.
Households are encouraged to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. People should try to stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen, and avoid physical exercise during peak heat.
The Met Office added: “If you are going into open water to cool down, take care and follow local safety advice.”
