Temperatures could hit 36C in parts of England today as heatwave conditions return to some areas, according to the GFS weather model. The hot spell marks the fourth heatwave of the year, though it is not expected to be as widespread as previous ones.
Counties Facing Extreme Heat
The GFS model shows potential highs of 36C in East Anglia and the south-east, with 35C expected across much of eastern and south-eastern England. The Midlands may see 32-33C, while Yorkshire could reach 31C. Wales is forecast to hit 25C, with Northern Ireland and Scotland remaining cooler.
Eleven English counties are predicted to see 35C or more: Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Essex, Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, and Middlesex. Temperature anomaly maps indicate central, eastern, and southern England will be well above the seasonal average.
Met Office Forecast
The Met Office described this week's hot spell as "short-lived" and noted it "will not be widespread across the whole of the UK." An official heatwave is declared when temperatures exceed the threshold for three consecutive days: 28C in and around London, and 25C elsewhere. Conditions are only expected to reach heatwave levels in England.
"By Friday, temperatures are expected to be much closer to average for most of the UK, and slightly below average in the far north," the Met Office said. "The far south is likely to stay a little warmer as high pressure continues to influence conditions, although it will feel markedly different from the midweek highs."
