Greater Manchester Market Food Halls Close in Heatwave

Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor, two popular food halls in Greater Manchester, have been forced to close today due to the ongoing heatwave. The venues, located in Altrincham and Manchester's Northern Quarter, announced the closure on social media, citing excessively hot kitchen conditions.

Record-Breaking Temperatures

The UK is experiencing unprecedented heat, with Wednesday marking the hottest June day on record at 36.1°C in Gosport, Hampshire. The Met Office forecasts further highs of 38°C today, with Greater Manchester expected to reach 33°C. An amber extreme heat warning remains in place until midnight Friday.

Impact on Hospitality Businesses

Many hospitality businesses have altered or suspended operations due to the heat. The team behind Altrincham Market and Mackie Mayor decided to close entirely, reassuring customers they will reopen on Friday. In a joint Instagram post, they stated: “Closed today…due to the bloody heat! Apologies for any inconvenience..That’s right folks..we’re unfortunately succumb to the heat..the extreme weather warnings have forced us to close for the day as the temperatures in the kitchens are pretty nuts..but not to worry! We’ll be back tomorrow with all your favourite grub & refreshments..the outdoor market’ll be open..plenty of outdoor seating..&we’ll be back right back on schedule!”

Sister Sites Also Affected

The sister site Picturedrome in Macclesfield is also closed. Tender Cow, which operates kitchens at all three locations, commented: “We’re so sorry guys. Every one of our kitchens is shut today…a glass roof, a searing heatwave and multiple ovens and grills does not a good combo make. We’ll be back tomorrow well rest and ready to go. Thanks for bearing with us.”
