UK Braces for -10C Arctic Blast and Widespread Snow This Week
UK Weather: Widespread Snow and Ice Forecast, -10C Temps

The United Kingdom is on high alert for a severe cold snap, with forecasters predicting widespread snow and ice to hit the country just days after major flooding incidents. A powerful Arctic blast is set to drive temperatures down to a bone-chilling -10C in northern parts of Britain, marking a dramatic shift from the recent spell of unusually warm weather.

Arctic Air Triggers Snowfall and Ice Warnings

According to Jim Dale, Senior Meteorologist at British Weather Services, the snow could begin falling as early as today, with conditions intensifying over the coming days. "As the Storm Claudia mopping up gathers pace, the next episode is one of widespread ice and northern snow," Mr Dale told the Mirror. He indicated that the most significant snow accumulations are expected across Scotland, potentially creeping into northern England by Wednesday.

Edinburgh is forecast to receive a substantial dumping, with up to 7cm of snow possible in just a three-hour period on Tuesday morning. While Scotland and northern England are set for the brunt of the snowfall, the Midlands and southern regions are expected to be spared, though they will not escape the biting cold.

Met Office Issues Stark Wind Chill Alert

The Met Office has corroborated the severe forecast, warning the public of a "marked wind chill" accompanying the freeze. Dan Holley, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, explained the meteorological driver behind the sudden change. "As Storm Claudia retreats to the south, high pressure to the northwest will drive a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK," he stated.

Mr Holley confirmed that this pattern will bring much colder conditions and a risk of wintry hazards like snow and ice. He added that widespread frosts are expected across the UK, with overnight temperatures falling as low as -7C in many areas and potentially reaching -12C in northern Scotland by Friday. Daytime temperatures are also predicted to remain in single figures nationwide.

Regional Impacts and Travel Disruption

Latest weather maps from Ventusky suggest that the snowfall will not be confined solely to Scotland. North Wales and the north-east coast of England, including areas around Scarborough, could see a sprinkling of snow in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

For the south of England, the primary concerns will be heavy frost and freezing temperatures, with London bracing for a low of -7C on Friday morning. The public is urged to stay updated with the latest forecasts, as the Met Office has indicated that weather warnings for snow and ice are likely to be issued.
