The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain across parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, ahead of a potential return to 30°C temperatures by the weekend.
A yellow rain warning is in effect for central Scotland from 2pm to 9pm on Tuesday, with the risk of temporary flooding. Up to 20mm of rain could fall in an hour, with some locations possibly seeing 30-40mm in two to three hours.
Meanwhile, a yellow thunderstorm warning covers large parts of Northern Ireland from midday until 6pm, bringing hail, thunderstorms, and localised flooding. Forecasters predict 10-15mm of rain in less than an hour, with up to 25-30mm in two to three hours.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into Wednesday, with rain moving from west to east across Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern England, while the south remains drier. Thursday will see some showers in southern England but will be largely dry elsewhere.
By the weekend, high pressure is set to dominate in the south, with temperatures climbing into the high 20s or low 30s. Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon noted that while some areas could meet the three-day heatwave criteria, it is unlikely to be as hot as last week, which saw a provisional June record of 37.7°C in Norfolk.
