Weather maps show temperatures dropping to 7C in parts of the UK at 6am on Friday, August 7, with some 40 areas across Scotland, England and Wales expected to fall below 10C.
The ECMWF model indicates Scotland will be the coolest region, with most of the country below 10C. Areas in Durham, Devon and Warwickshire are also set to see sub-10C mornings.
Why temperatures are falling
The Met Office has said that after a wet period, conditions are likely to turn drier from Thursday, with a "rather changeable" spell expected. This will bring cooler temperatures but also the chance of sunny interludes.
The Met Office forecast for August 7 to August 16 states: "Probably rather changeable to begin this period, with some rain or showers at times, but also the likelihood of some decent drier interludes too. Towards mid August, high pressure may become rather more dominant towards the north of the UK, with lower pressure further to the south. This means there is a greater chance for Atlantic frontal systems or thundery interludes to affect southern areas, certainly in comparison to recent weeks, though rainfall amounts could be quite variable with some areas seeing relatively little."
Areas expected to drop below 10C
According to the maps, the following areas could see morning temperatures below 10C:
- England: Devon, Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Yorkshire, Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland
- Wales: Glamorgan, Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire, Merionethshire, Denbighshire, Montgomeryshire
- Scotland: Wigtownshire, Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfriesshire, Roxburghshire, Selkirkshire, Peeblesshire, Berwickshire, East Lothian, Midlothian, Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, Perthshire, Angus, Aberdeenshire, Kincardineshire, Argyllshire, Inverness-shire, Banffshire, Ross-shire, Cromartyshire, Sutherland, Caithness, Nairnshire
The cold conditions are expected to be brief, as data suggests temperatures could also drop to 7C on Tuesday, August 11.
