UK Weather: 11 Counties Face 4C Chill After Heatwave

Weather maps suggest 11 UK counties could see temperatures of 5C or below, as the Met Office warns of a "changeable period" ahead. A much cooler spell is expected next week after temperatures provisionally hit 35C at Heathrow and Kew Gardens in London on Tuesday, the Met Office said.

It followed a scorching bank holiday weekend that saw the UK break its previous record for the hottest May temperature. On Monday, Kew Gardens reached 34.8C, beating the previous record of 32.8C set in 1922 and 1944.

Temperature Drop Expected

However, minimum temperature weather maps from WXCharts, which uses MetDesk data, suggest that in the early hours of next Tuesday (2 June), temperatures could hover between 4C and 7C across Scotland and northern England. Meanwhile, Northern Ireland, the Midlands, southern England and Wales are expected to see minimum temperatures in the high single digits.

In Scotland, the Highlands, Moray and Aberdeenshire in the north, along with Jamestown in Dumfries and Galloway in the south, could see temperatures dip to a chilly 4C.

Counties Set to See 5C or Below on Tuesday

  • Scotland: Aberdeenshire, Angus, Highland, Moray, Perth and Kinross, Scottish Borders, South Lanarkshire, Dumfries and Galloway
  • England: North Yorkshire, Cumbria, Northumberland

In its outlook for Monday, June 1, to Wednesday, June 10, the Met Office says: "A changeable period, as a sequence of Atlantic weather systems move in from the west to bring a mixture of drier spells and some showers or longer spells of rain at times. The best of the drier conditions are more likely towards the south and east, with the rain generally more frequent in parts of the west and northwest, although there will be drier interludes here also."

"Temperatures will be near-normal overall, with the warmest spots most likely across eastern areas. It will also be breezy at times, most especially across northwestern areas."

The Met Office’s outlook for June 11 to 25 says conditions will likely be "changeable or unsettled" at first, before high pressure becomes more dominant from mid-month, bringing drier and more settled conditions. "Temperatures are expected to be near normal at first, but probably rising above average later," the national weather service says.
