Patriots Coach Vrabel Focuses on Spring Workouts After Draft Absence
Vrabel Focused on Spring Workouts After Draft Absence

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the media on Wednesday for the first time since he missed the final day of the NFL draft last month to seek counseling. The decision came after photographs surfaced of him with longtime NFL reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. Vrabel, however, insisted that his focus remains squarely on football as the team begins voluntary spring workouts.

Vrabel's Commitment to the Team

Speaking to reporters, Vrabel acknowledged the personal challenges but stressed his dedication to coaching. "We all have to deal with things outside of here. And my focus and, obviously, the excitement I have for coaching is what is most important right now," he said. When asked if he anticipated missing more time, Vrabel responded, "I can only tell you I'm going to be there today. I can't tell you anything other than I'm going to be out there today in full force. And I mean that because who knows what's going to come up? Anything could happen. So, I'm going to focus on today and the excitement that we've had and that we've built so far."

Spring Workouts and Roster Additions

The Patriots took the field for the first of seven voluntary practices leading up to next month's mandatory three-day minicamp. Notable absences included cornerback Christian Gonzalez and receiver Kayshon Boutte, with Gonzalez eligible for a contract extension and Boutte reportedly involved in trade discussions. Vrabel, however, emphasized the addition of 44 new players through free agency and the draft. "This is a great opportunity, the spring, we don't have to worry about opponents, our schedule is pretty much the same," he explained. "The players just have a routine and each and every day in the spring is similar. But it's just about teaching, it's about teaching these guys the scheme. ... So that's what the spring time is about."

Leadership and Work-Life Balance

Vrabel expressed confidence in his leadership, stating he tries to be the same presence he has always been. "I don't want to speak for the players," he said. "I feel great. I feel like I'm trying to give them the information that is going to help them do their job. I've talked about this as far as the importance of the balance between their own success, which leads to great things for them and the people that they care about. But then also trying to manage that with the team and that's a fine balance of the dynamic that we wage in this business of professional sports." He also described his work-life balance as positive, saying, "My family is great. I love my wife Jen, I love the boys, I love my personal friends. And then, this spring is focused on really the coaching staff, the players, more importantly than the coaching staff."

Potential Receiver Addition

Following the release of wide receiver Stefon Diggs in March, the Patriots have remained quiet about pursuing a top receiver. Speculation about a trade for A.J. Brown, who played under Vrabel in Tennessee, continues to circulate. Vrabel did not rule out adding a receiver for quarterback Drake Maye before training camp. "We want to continue to improve the roster every opportunity that we get. When those opportunities arise, I don't know. I know that the guys that we have here are working extremely hard," he said. Defensive tackle Milton Williams, who played with Brown in Philadelphia, commented, "You see the noise. You see it. He can definitely help our team. But they don't pay me to do that (be a general manager)."
