Parts of the UK are expected to be warmer than Ibiza and Corfu this week as the spring equinox arrives on Thursday. Temperatures in southern England could reach 19C (66F), according to the Met Office.
Met Office meteorologist Becky Mitchell said the forecast is 8C hotter than the average for this time of year. “We’re expecting quite a lot of dry weather, increasing amounts of sunshine as we head through the next few days,” she said. “By Wednesday, we’re looking at highs of about 17C in the south. And then on Thursday, we could get as high as 19C.”
That temperature would exceed the highs of 17C forecast for Ibiza and 16C for Corfu on Thursday. However, the start of the week will still feel chilly, with some overnight frost. “The temperatures we have got currently are around average, which is about 10C. But we’ve also got quite a chilly wind at the moment, so it’s making it feel even colder,” Mitchell added.
The warm weather is due to a large area of high pressure bringing dry and sunny conditions. The warmest air will be in southern parts, with the south-east and Midlands seeing the highest temperatures on Wednesday. By Thursday, the warmth will spread further north, affecting southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and Wales, while northern Scotland will remain cooler.
