Met Office Issues Snow Warning as UK Faces -7C Freeze

The Met Office has detailed an imminent shift to wintry conditions, with snow anticipated to blanket approximately 60% of the United Kingdom. A low-pressure system moving in from the west is set to trigger a rapid temperature drop, contrasting sharply with last week's balmy weather that saw highs of 19C in Greater London.

Forecast Details and Impacted Regions

In a YouTube forecast, meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth explained that a notable change in air mass will bring a "very different feel" by Friday. Snow is expected to fall at elevations as low as 200 metres, which is relatively unusual for this time of year, affecting areas like the Northwest of England, north Wales, and parts of Scotland.

Key points from the forecast include:

  • Patchy frost in sheltered areas due to strong winds on Friday.
  • Frequent showers in northwestern regions, mixing snow and hail, with a risk of ice formation.
  • Temperatures feeling as cold as -7C on Friday, largely driven by fierce westerly winds, with chilly conditions persisting through the weekend.

Weather maps indicate a messy outlook, with white hues symbolising snow across many regions and blue hues covering areas like the Southwest of England. The mercury, which exceeded 15C in Goudhurst, Kent, recently, will plummet, keeping daytime temperatures in single figures.

Weekend Weather and Flood Warnings

Following the snow, rainy conditions are forecast for the weekend, particularly in the Northwest of England. This comes after heavy rain on Thursday, affecting the Northeast of England in the morning and most of Wales in the afternoon.

The Met Office has already issued 21 flood warnings, primarily for waterways in the Southwest of England. Examples include groundwater flooding for the Hooke in West Dorset and the Till in Wiltshire, highlighting the broader unsettled period ahead.

Ms Shuttleworth added that the general theme remains "unsettled into the weekend," with widespread chilly feelings expected regardless of location. Residents are advised to prepare for hazardous travel conditions and potential disruptions due to ice and snow accumulation.
