UK Heatwave: Temperatures to Soar to 39C Next Week

The UK is bracing for its fifth heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach as high as 39C in some regions by Thursday, August 13.

Regional Forecast

New weather maps show parts of the Midlands and the south will sizzle in temperatures close to 40C, with a wave of volcanic red smothering large parts of the country. WXCharts predict Birmingham will be the hottest, with 39C, while the West Midlands (Derby) and London will see highs of 38C.

Other regions will also experience extreme heat, with temperatures between 35C and 37C in the East Midlands (Lincoln, Nottingham) and the southeast (Brighton, Canterbury). Yorkshire (Scarborough, York) and East Anglia (Cambridge, Peterborough) will sit between 31C and 36C.

Cooler but Still Warm

In the northwest (Manchester, Carlisle, Liverpool), temperatures will be around 26C to 30C, and the northeast (Newcastle) will see around 30C. Wales (Conwy, Cardiff) will record highs of 27C and 25C, while Scotland will be cooler, with highs of 23C to 27C in the south and east (Edinburgh, Dumfries, Aberdeen, Inverness) and lows of 17C to 22C in the northwest (Fort William, Oban), which will be the coldest part of the country. Northern Ireland will also sit between 23C and 27C.

Met Office Forecast

The Met’s deputy chief forecaster, Mike Silverstone, said: “Temperatures will climb through the weekend and, more significantly, through much of next week. After a brief dip on Monday, high pressure will move across the UK before settling to the east, allowing a southerly flow to develop. A fairly widespread heatwave is likely across large parts of England and Wales, with hot conditions developing in places.

“The heat is expected to peak for much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland on Wednesday, with up to 34C possible in parts of central and southern England and southeast Wales. East Anglia and south-east England, however, could see temperatures even higher on Thursday. Humidity levels are also expected to increase through the week, which may make conditions feel more uncomfortable, particularly overnight.”
