The United Kingdom is set to experience its fifth heatwave of the year within days, according to weather forecasts, with temperatures potentially reaching 35C in parts of England.
Weather modelling from the GFS system suggests that from August 11, thermometers could climb to 31C across much of eastern, central and southern England, as well as parts of Wales. By August 12, maximum possible temperatures could reach 35C, with the Midlands and south-east expected to be the warmest regions. A day later, East Anglia could see highs of 34C, while many areas of central, southern and eastern England, along with South Wales, could record 31-33C.
Should these temperatures persist for three consecutive days, it would constitute an official heatwave. The threshold for a heatwave is 28C in the south-east of England, easing to 25C further afield. Up to 11 counties, all in England, could reach 35C or higher later this month, according to model maps.
The Met Office's outlook for August 5 to 14 indicates a generally changeable period, with some rain or showers possible, heavy and thundery in places, followed by drier, brighter spells. However, it also warns of the potential for "very warm or hot and humid spells", especially in the south. Temperature anomaly charts show the UK marked in dark red, indicating conditions well above the seasonal average.
