The United Kingdom is on standby for its first significant bout of widespread snowfall since last winter, with forecasters predicting a dramatic and sustained drop in temperatures beginning this weekend.
From Mild to Wild: A Weather U-Turn
After weeks of unseasonably mild autumn weather, a major shift is imminent. The country will first contend with Storm Claudia, which is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds tomorrow, prompting amber warnings for flooding in some areas.
However, the real story begins as the storm clears. A change in wind direction will open the floodgates for a blast of Arctic air to sweep across the nation. This cold airmass will firmly establish itself over the northern parts of the UK by the weekend, bringing an increased chance of snow.
Snow has already made an early appearance, with flurries photographed on Cairngorm Mountain in the Scottish Highlands today.
The Snowfall Timeline: When and Where
According to ITV forecaster Laura Tobin, the cold air will begin pushing down through Scotland and northern England from Saturday. Initial snow showers are expected on Scottish hills, with more significant snowfall likely on Sunday across the Highlands, parts of northern England, and Wales.
Meteorologist Alex Burkill of the Met Office confirmed the dramatic change, stating: "We're going to say goodbye to the milder and at times wetter weather we have at the moment and instead we're going to see something markedly colder and with that the risk of some snow for many places too."
The cold snap is expected to intensify early next week. By Monday, the Arctic air will have spread across the entire country, with temperatures forecast to be several degrees below the average for November.
A Nationwide Chill with Widespread Snow Potential
The most intriguing development is forecast for the middle of next week. Laura Tobin told Good Morning Britain that on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, there is a chance for everyone in the UK to see snowfall.
While the most significant accumulations are still expected across northern areas, she excitedly confirmed that "there's a chance of all of us seeing snow as we head into next week."
The Met Office has warned of a 'big change in our weather ahead through the next ten days', with conditions becoming 'noticeably colder everywhere' by the start of next week. This will be accompanied by overnight frosts and a brisk northerly wind that will make it feel even colder.
This impending cold spell marks a stark contrast to the exceptionally mild conditions experienced through much of November and signals the true start of the winter weather season for Britain.
