Storm Chaser's Harrowing Encounter with a Violent EF3 Tornado
On April 4th, 2023, professional storm chaser Tanner Charles faced a life-threatening situation when he became trapped inside a violently swirling tornado near Lewistown, Illinois. The 32-year-old adrenaline enthusiast, known for chasing extreme weather across the United States, found himself questioning his limits as he confronted the eye of the storm.
A Calculated Risk Turns into a Nightmare Scenario
Charles, who operates under the social media handles @tannercharleschasing on Instagram and Tanner Charles on YouTube, had ventured to rural farmland to document a fast-brewing tornado. With thousands of followers tracking his minute-by-minute updates, he typically observes from a safe distance. However, on this fateful day, his car became ensnared by fallen power lines, leaving him and his friends with no escape route as the twister advanced.
'We were ahead of the tornado by a mile-and-a-half when the storm brought down a section of the power lines just where we were,' Charles explained to the Daily Mail. 'It was four poles that all went down and we were in the middle of that, which is super unfortunate. The storm came down on top of us - we were stuck.'
The group had taken what they described as a 'calculated risk' by crossing the storm's path, but their hopes for an easterly retreat were dashed when the lines collapsed. Sparks flew on either side of the vehicle as the tornado, now merely 90 seconds away, carved a destructive path directly toward them.
The Direct Hit and Unimaginable Chaos
When the tornado finally struck, it unleashed chaos, shattering the car's windows and subjecting the occupants to terrifying forces. 'We sat there, we had to wait. The trail came, it started hitting us. We put our heads down and the back windows literally exploded,' Charles recalled. 'Then all the wind whipped through and it felt like we were in a tin can and there was a bunch of people firing BB guns everywhere all around us. It was crazy.'
Despite the imminent danger, Charles remained relatively calm, attributing his composure to his devout Christian faith. He recounted praying for protection before the impact, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace. 'I felt this peace come inside of me, so I was chilling. I just felt so much peace and I was like, "Oh, I feel like we're going to be okay",' he said.
He added, 'When the trail started hitting us at the height of it, I got a vision of angels holding the car down and after that I was like, "Oh, we're chilling" even though this is insane.'
Aftermath and a Miraculous Survival
The ordeal did not end with the tornado's passage. After the storm seemed to subside, the car was shoved into a ditch by a massive steel grain bin that had rolled and collided with the vehicle. Charles experienced a 'mix of emotions' during the incident, noting, 'Even though I had this peace, this stillness, I still was freaking out but also not, I felt like we were going to be safe but the intensity of the moment was still pretty insane.'
Miraculously, everyone in the car emerged unharmed, though shaken. Charles admitted to crying afterward and described their survival as a 'miracle.' He explained the severity of the tornado, which was rated as a high-end EF3, nearly an EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. 'Looking back, the tornado is a high-end EF3, almost EF4, and EF2s can pick up vehicles and roll them. So a high-end EF3 can pick up vehicles and toss them a couple 100 yards,' he detailed.
'The fact we were in open farmland, so there's nothing impeding the winds from hitting us at full strength, and we were hit broadside. We had the full force of the wind hitting the car,' Charles continued. 'Then on top of that, we were hit on the southeast side of the tornado, which is the most powerful part of the tornado.'
He firmly attributes their survival to divine intervention. 'There's no reason why we shouldn't have been tossed and thrown, we should be dead or at least severely injured, but nothing happened. So I don't know, I 100% believe it's God.'
A Lifelong Passion for Storm Chasing
Despite this harrowing experience, Charles has never been injured in his 16 years of storm chasing. His fascination with extreme weather began in childhood, fueled by curiosity about storms, clouds, and documentaries watched on his grandparents' television. At age 15, his father took him on his first chase, where he witnessed a 'rotating wall cloud' and encountered the Storm Chasers TV show, leading to a lifelong obsession.
Today, storm chasing is his full-time profession, with his social media accounts chronicling daring adventures that captivate audiences worldwide. This incident near Lewistown serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers inherent in pursuing nature's most violent phenomena.
