After a period of heavy downpours, Scotland is set to experience a return to warmer temperatures, with weather maps predicting highs of 21C by the end of the week. The mercury rising back into the twenties will be a welcome change for many following the beginning of June's continuous rain.
Temperatures Rise Across Central Belt
Temperatures across the central belt of Scotland rose yesterday (June 14) after a long night of support for the Tartan Army in their first World Cup match in 28 years. Strathallan reached 19C by early evening, and this upward trend is expected to continue for most of the week, according to Met Office weather maps.
In a mixed outlook, Fort William is set to rise to 19C by 4pm this afternoon (June 15), with Ullapool, Glasgow, Cumnock, and Dumfries following closely at 18C. However, the east coast will see cooler temperatures this evening, with Aberdeen and Durness highs around 12C, and Dundee and Aberlour at 14C.
Rain Before the Warmth
Before the temperatures rise later in the week, Scots must endure another soggy evening as a large band of rain is expected to travel across the country tonight and into the early hours of Tuesday morning (June 16). Meteorologist Honor Criswick provided the Monday forecast: "Any sunshine eventually starting to turn a bit hazier from the west as clouds start to thicken up across the very far south west, producing some showers by late into the afternoon."
She added: "But across the bulk of the country it will still remain dry and settled, light winds continuing. Still feeling fairly warm particularly in the west, highs pushing into the high teens, low twenties. However, still that little bit cooler and fresher across parts of Aberdeenshire."
Looking into the evening, Criswick said: "We will continue to see this band of showers merging into longer spells of rain, drifting its way northeastwards through the first part of the evening. Turning a little bit heavy at times across the hills. Into Tuesday morning the rain is still going to be with us, before clearing its way northeastwards."
Midweek Warmth and Weekend Peak
After tonight's rainfall, temperatures are expected to settle in the mid to high teens across the country, with the warm spell also encompassing the east coast. On Wednesday, June 17, Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeenshire are predicted to enjoy highs of 19C, while the west and north of Scotland will be around 16C or higher.
Temperatures are currently expected to stay in this range throughout the rest of the week before rising on Sunday, June 21. Weather maps predict that Jedburgh will jump to 21C by late afternoon on Sunday, with Dumfries, Lauder, and Edinburgh also reaching the 20C mark. Elsewhere, Pitlochry, Forres, Perth, Dundee, and Stirling will sit between 18C and 19C as the week ends. Parts of the west coast will be slightly cooler, with Ullapool, Oban, and Tarbert having highs of 16C.
Met Office Long Range Forecast
The Met Office's long range forecast for the weekend reads: "To the northwest of here, generally more changeable at first, but there is a signal for high pressure to build more widely as we move towards the latter part of June. This could bring more widely drier, settled conditions with temperatures probably remaining above average for most."
