A serious bushfire emergency on the New South Wales South Coast has seen its threat level reduced, following a period of extreme danger where residents were warned it was too late to flee.
Critical 'Too Late to Leave' Warning Issued
On Sunday afternoon, a chilling alert was sent to residents in the Worrowing Heights area, approximately 16 kilometres east of Shoalhaven. The message stated unequivocally that it was now too dangerous to evacuate. 'If you are in the Worrowing Heights area, you are in danger. It is now too late to leave,' the official warning read. Residents were instructed to seek shelter immediately inside a solid structure, such as a house, as the out-of-control fire raged.
Firefighting Efforts and Downgraded Alert
The bushfire, burning north of Sanctuary Point, south of The Wool Road, and to the west and east of Larmer Avenue, was intensified by hot and windy conditions. However, by 8:12 pm on Sunday, a reduced Watch and Act alert was issued. The NSW Rural Fire Service confirmed that while the fire remained out of control, its intensity had been weakened thanks to the ongoing, determined efforts of ground crews, who were assisted by water bombing aircraft.
Current Advice and Staying Informed
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant. 'Stay alert and monitor your surroundings,' the NSW Rural Fire Service advised. For those who stayed to defend their properties, the instruction is to monitor both inside and outside for small fires and burning embers. A key warning was also issued about the dangers that remain after the main fire front has passed, noting that trees can be unstable and fall. The public is directed to the Hazards Near Me app, the RFS website, local radio, and the RFS Bush Fire Information Line on 1800 679 737 for the latest information.
