The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat health alert for parts of England, warning that high temperatures over the coming days could increase the risk to life for vulnerable people. The alert covers the East Midlands, east of England, south-east and south-west England, including London, from 12pm on Saturday until 5pm on Wednesday.
While the weather is expected to warm up across the UK, the North East will not experience the same intensity as southern areas. The Met Office forecasts temperatures in the south to reach the low to mid-20s this week, rising to the high 20s or early 30s by the weekend and into next week.
North East Forecast: Breezy and Mild
Thursday will see patchy rain clearing the far south, with sunny spells developing elsewhere. The North East will remain breezy, with unsettled conditions expected from Friday in northern areas. The Met Office said the weather is forecast to become increasingly warm further south.
For the early part of next week, temperatures will rise, possibly reaching heatwave conditions for some in the south. However, the forecast suggests this event is unlikely to match the high temperatures and humidity of last week’s heatwave.
Tony Wisson, Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, said: “Toward the weekend, high pressure will continue to build in across most of the UK as it extends from the Azores. This will lead to more settled, warm or very warm conditions for many, especially across England and Wales, though some rain may still affect the far north.”
He added: “The forecast for this weekend suggests that temperatures could approach high 20s°C across parts of England, perhaps 30°C in parts of the southeast, with values of mid to high 20s°C in Wales. Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low.”
North East Temperature Outlook
In the North East, temperatures will remain in the low 20s over the weekend and early next week. Warmer weather is expected on Wednesday, July 8, when the mercury could rise to 25°C in the region.
In Newcastle, the highest temperatures predicted are:
- Friday, July 3: 22°C
- Saturday, July 4: 22°C
- Sunday, July 5: 21°C
