The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms across nine areas in Scotland, urging residents to prepare an emergency flood kit. The warning is in effect from 3pm to 10pm today, with the national weather agency advising people to consider their risk of flash flooding and gather essential items such as torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs.
This comes after England and Wales experienced their warmest spring on record, partly due to an exceptionally early heatwave in late May. However, conditions have now shifted as low pressure systems bring heavy rain, wind, and lightning. Parts of southeast England have already seen more rain in 24 hours than during the entire months of April and May.
The Met Office warns of potential damage to buildings from lightning strikes, difficult driving conditions due to spray, standing water, and hail, as well as possible delays to train services. Short-term power losses and flooding of some homes and businesses are also likely. Travelers are advised to check road conditions and public transport timetables, and to amend plans if necessary.
For those caught outside during a thunderstorm, the Met Office recommends seeking safe enclosed shelter, such as a car, and avoiding trees or other structures that could be struck by lightning. People on elevated ground should move to lower areas. The forecast for tonight indicates showers easing but continuing in the north and west, with further rain reaching western parts by dawn. Wednesday is expected to bring a band of rain moving eastwards, followed by sunshine and showers, with the heaviest in the north.
