Met Office Urges Brits in 33 Areas to Prepare Emergency Kits as Snow Approaches

The Met Office has issued urgent warnings for snow across 33 areas in the UK, advising residents to prepare emergency kits in anticipation of significant disruption. Forecasters predict that snow could begin falling on Wednesday night and continue into Thursday, with up to 15cm expected in some regions, leading to potential travel delays, stranded vehicles, and power cuts.

Dual Weather Warnings for Snow and Rain

Two separate yellow weather warnings for snow have been activated, covering a broad swathe of the country. The first warning, issued at 10am on Tuesday, February 17, encompasses all of Wales along with Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, and a large portion of the West Midlands. This alert is set to take effect from 4pm on Wednesday, February 18, and will remain in place for 14 hours until 6am on Thursday, February 19.

Residents in these areas are cautioned to expect widespread disruption, including delays to road, rail, and air travel, with the possibility of rural communities becoming isolated. The Met Office has indicated that 2-5cm of snow could accumulate widely above 150-200 metres, with potential for 10-15cm in higher elevations of mid and southeast Wales, Herefordshire, and Shropshire. Even lower elevations may see minor accumulations of less than 2cm, particularly from late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning.

Strong east to northeasterly winds are forecast to accompany the snowfall, which could exacerbate impacts in affected regions. A second warning, covering all of Northern Ireland, was announced at 7:45pm on Tuesday, February 17. This alert, in effect from 4am to 8pm on Wednesday, February 18, warns of rain, hill snow, and strong winds that may disrupt travel and power supplies.

Essential Emergency Kit Recommendations

In response to the impending severe weather, the Met Office has strongly recommended that drivers and residents assemble emergency kits to ensure safety and preparedness. Key items to include are:

  • Warm clothing and blankets
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Torches with extra batteries
  • Ice scrapers and de-icer
  • Warning triangles and high-visibility vests
  • In-car phone chargers or power packs

The forecaster emphasised that being prepared can significantly improve coping mechanisms during power cuts or isolation due to snow. "People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow," the Met Office stated. "It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."

Affected Areas and Additional Rain Warning

The areas covered by the first snow warning include:

  • London & South East England: Oxfordshire
  • South West England: Gloucestershire
  • Wales: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen, Wrexham
  • West Midlands: Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Telford and Wrekin, Warwickshire, West Midlands Conurbation, Worcestershire

The second warning for snow and rain applies to all counties in Northern Ireland: County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh, County Londonderry, and County Tyrone. Additionally, a third yellow warning for rain has been issued for south-west England and the entire south coast, effective from 6am on Wednesday to 8am on Thursday, further compounding weather-related challenges across the UK.
