The UK is set for its fifth heatwave of the year, with temperatures expected to soar to 31°C in parts of the North East on Thursday. The Met Office has forecast that Thursday will be the hottest day, with temperatures potentially reaching 36°C in East Anglia and south-east England.
North East forecast
In Newcastle, Monday will see patches of mist clearing to leave a dry and sunny day, with a maximum temperature of 20°C. Temperatures are predicted to rise to 24°C on Tuesday, then soar to 28°C on Wednesday and 30°C on Thursday, before dropping to 23°C on Friday.
Some areas of the North East, such as Darlington and Barnard Castle in County Durham, may see temperatures increase to 31°C on Thursday.
Health alerts issued
The government has issued yellow heat health alerts to seven areas of the country, providing an early warning when adverse temperatures are likely to impact on the health and wellbeing of the population. The North East and the North West are the only two areas not issued with an alert.
The Met Office said: "Largely dry next week with plenty of sunshine and light winds. Turning hotter and more humid from mid-week with some very warm nights."
