Heavy rain to hit 29 areas on Monday

Met Office forecasts have placed 29 areas across Britain on alert for heavy rain on Monday, with the heaviest downpours likely to hit Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders.

Western parts of Scotland and areas of northwest England are also expected to see substantial rainfall, while showers further south could be thundery along the Cornish coasts and parts of Devon.

Temperature drop after recent heat

Friday saw the mercury reach 27.3C in Charlwood, Surrey, but temperatures will begin to fall this week as the band of low pressure sweeps northeast. Western parts of the UK could see around 17C on Monday, a marked drop from the peak recorded in the Southeast.

Forecast for the coming days

The Met Office forecast for Monday to Wednesday states: "Rain affecting northern areas Monday and Tuesday, while southern areas will turn increasing hot and humid with a chance of some showers. Showers or longer spells of rain on Wednesday."

Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer said: "A change in weather type early next week will see warmer conditions return across England and Wales but in contrast to much of the summer, this will be associated with showers or perhaps thunderstorms for some places. However, some parts of the south will only see small amounts of rain. It will stay cooler in the north with the potential for heavy rain to build up, especially over parts of Scotland."

Drought status already in place

These warnings come just days after the Environment Agency revealed that over half of England has been experiencing sweltering conditions, declaring drought status for multiple regions. This covered much of central, eastern and southern England, indicating that further restrictions on water use could be on the horizon.
