Met Office names 181 UK areas facing rain on Tuesday

It is set to be a wet couple of days for tens of millions of Brits, with rain expected in more than 180 areas across the UK on Tuesday.The Met Office forecast, issued at 4am on Monday, states: “Outbreaks of heavy rain in the north today with a risk of thunder. Scattered showers in the south with the odd thunderstorm. Very warm and humid. Windy in the north.”Temperatures will remain high for drier areas, particularly the south east, where the mercury is set to reach 28C. Experts expect a return to sunshine after the wet spell, with the Met Office adding: “Rather unsettled in the north over the next few days with rain or showers. Some showers in the south at first, but turning drier from Thursday.”

Rain to affect all of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

Weather maps show rain will hit 181 council areas across the country, including every one of Scotland's 32 council areas, all 22 in Wales and the 11 that make up Northern Ireland.In England, 116 council areas out of 153 are expected to see some form of rain. The heaviest downpours will fall in the afternoon in the north of England, with more than 32mm – the Met Office’s heaviest rainfall rating – expected in the Yorkshire Dales and Lancashire.Heavy rain is also expected in Cornwall, Devon, Newcastle and the Scottish Borders on Tuesday evening. Much of the rain will come from a band of cloud moving northeastwards, followed by multiple scattered showers.Temperatures will remain fairly typical for August, with Belfast at 23C, Cardiff and Manchester at 25C, Edinburgh at 20C and London at 28C.
