The Met Office has identified the areas of the country set to face rain on Sunday as the recent summery spell comes to an end. New weather maps show downpours affecting parts of Scotland, Wales, the Midlands, and northern England.
Worst-hit regions
The heaviest showers are expected in Lincolnshire in the East Midlands and Herefordshire in the West of England, where rainfall could reach up to 32mm/hr by 5.45pm on Sunday. The Westmorland and Furness area of Cumbria, along with parts of Scotland's west coast, could see up to 16mm/hr of rain on Sunday evening.

The Met Office forecast for Sunday warns of persistent rain in Scotland and Northern Ireland, while central southern areas of the UK should be drier. The forecast states: "Rain clears from many central and southern areas, with a few showers following. Rain persists across northern England and eastern Scotland, while persistent showers spread into Northern Ireland and Scotland."
Outlook for next week
Looking ahead, rain could continue in western areas next week, along with thunder. The forecast for Monday to Wednesday reads: "Sunny spells and showers through the first half of the week, some heavy with a risk of thunder. Becoming drier at times, though rain may spread into western areas later."
