The Met Office has confirmed the next "spell of heat" set to arrive in the UK. It's been an unsettled week so far across several regions, but it could all be about to change with more hot weather on the horizon.
In its outlook for this week, the Met Office said temperatures will start to increase from today (Tuesday, July 28), particularly in the southeast. The warmer weather will follow a mild and wet weekend for many.
Temperature Rise Expected
The UK forecaster said: "From Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rise, and much of England, Wales and eastern Scotland will enjoy a dry day with sunny conditions. This marks the start of an increasingly warm, but relatively short, spell of hot weather."
Met Office deputy chief forecaster Gregory Wolverson said: “This is a short-lived spell of heat, but temperatures will climb quickly through the first half of the week, particularly in the southeast.
“By Wednesday, some areas could see temperatures in the mid-30°Cs, and while the heat will not be widespread across the whole of the UK, it will be enough for parts of the southeast to likely meet official heatwave criteria by Thursday.
"Elsewhere, the weather will be more changeable, and the change to cooler, more unsettled conditions will arrive sooner from the north and west, with a mix of sunshine and showers."
North-South Split
Across northern areas, it is possible there will be heavier showers with a small risk of isolated thunderstorms through the week. While temperatures down south could reach 35°C, it's looking to be a different picture up north, which will be more unsettled.
The weather in Merseyside will remain in the mid 20s, with a high of 26°C forecast on Wednesday afternoon. But rain is still possible across the region as well as some opportunities for sunshine.
Detailed Forecasts
In its outlook for the North West on Tuesday, the Met Office said: "Tuesday will get off to a rather grey and breezy start with some fog patches over the hills and a little drizzle in places. It will gradually brighten up though, with some warm spells of sunshine developing for the afternoon."
Looking ahead to Wednesday, the forecast added: "Low cloud and hill fog will lift to give some bright intervals. However, cloud thickening from the northwest heading into the afternoon with some showers developing. Feeling warm and humid. Maximum temperature 26 °C."
Thursday will be "fresher" for all, with sunshine and a few showers. The Met Office said: "An isolated shower on Friday, though mostly dry with further sunshine developing at times heading into the weekend."
