The Met Office has confirmed that a heatwave is set to sweep across much of the UK this weekend, with Greater Manchester expecting warm and sunny weather. Temperatures in the region will peak at around 28C on Monday, making it the hottest day of the spell.
Forecast for Greater Manchester
From today (Friday, June 19), the region will experience a hot spell with 'noticeably humid' conditions. Highs of around 25C are forecast for Friday, followed by 22C on Saturday and 25C on Sunday. Monday will see the mercury climb to 28C, with cloudy and sunny intervals expected throughout the day.
UK-Wide Heatwave
In other parts of the UK, temperatures could reach a high of 34C over the weekend. Amber heat health alerts have been issued for the east, South East, and South West of England, as well as London, from 12pm on Thursday until 8pm on Tuesday. Parts of the south and South East are likely to meet the heatwave threshold, with a 40 per cent chance of exceeding the highest ever June temperature of 35.6C, set in 1957 and 1976.
Meteorologist Comments
Met Office meteorologist Alex Deakin described these temperatures as 'pretty unusual even for the middle part of June.' However, deputy chief forecaster Gregory Wolverson noted that the hot spell may not bring the 'wall-to-wall sunshine and blue skies' of the May heatwave, with cloud and fairly high humidity making it feel 'rather oppressive at times.'
