Andy Burnham fought back tears as he remembered his late father during his Labour Party conference speech. The Prime Minister became emotional talking about his dad Roy, who passed away this month. He paused during his speech, his voice broke and he appeared to choke up.

Mr Burnham said: “Whatever its flaws, this country gave my dad a good life. And it has given his sons opportunities he didn’t get for himself. He recognised that and was grateful for it. And so proud of what Nick, John and I did with them. If only he had been able to appreciate that moment of the family in Downing Street.”
The Prime Minister took an emotional pause, which led to a member of the audience shouting “go on Andy”.
Father's Labour loyalty and vision for the UK
Mr Burnham mentioned how his father had “religiously” voted for the Labour Party. He added: “The United Kingdom my dad represented is the one I believe in. A union of nations that gave trade unions and the cooperative movement to the world. The National Health Service. A country that stood up to fascism. A country of solidarity not separation.”
“Britain is not perfect. It can be better and we will make it so. But it stands for something worth saving.”
