Met Office Issues Easter Weekend Snow and Freeze Warning
The Met Office has confirmed forecasts predicting snow and a severe cold snap across the United Kingdom during the upcoming Easter weekend. This dramatic shift in weather comes after temperatures recently soared above 20C in parts of west Wales, highlighting a stark and sudden seasonal reversal.
Plunging Temperatures and Bitter Wind Chill
Temperatures are set to plummet sharply in the coming days, with meteorologists warning that wind chill could make it feel as bitterly cold as -7C in some regions. This freeze is driven by a band of cold air moving in from the west, which will also bring strong and disruptive winds.
Alex Burkill, a meteorologist at the Met Office, explained the conditions in a detailed video update. "Looking at Good Friday, there's the potential for a relatively small but deepening area of low pressure to track somewhere around northeastern parts of Scotland," he stated. "If this develops, we could see gusts of 55mph to 65mph, perhaps exceeding 75mph in a worst-case scenario."
Snowfall Predictions and Regional Impacts
Weather maps from forecasters indicate that snow is likely across several UK regions. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated across Scotland, particularly in the Scottish Highlands. However, projections suggest flurries could reach as far south as Staffordshire and parts of Wales during the holiday period.
Mr. Burkill added, "There's also the potential for a fair amount of rain, with 10mm to 20mm, perhaps more in northern and western Scotland. Some winteriness, sleet, and snow are expected to follow, primarily at higher elevations around 400 metres, but snow is nonetheless a significant risk."
Wet and Windy Conditions Nationwide
In addition to snow, the Easter weekend will be characterised by wet and windy weather across much of the country. The heaviest rain is forecast for western areas, including Cumbria and parts of south Wales. Strong westerly gales are expected to buffet regions such as the Yorkshire Dales, the Pennines, and parts of mid and north Wales like Powys, especially on Good Friday.
"We are likely to see some wetter weather and stronger winds, particularly towards the northwest as we go through Good Friday," Burkill noted. "It could also be particularly wet and windy through the middle part of the long weekend."
Brief Cold Snap Before a Return to Milder Weather
This cold spell represents a significant drop from the recent warm conditions. While Sunday morning may feel as cold as -7C in some places due to the wind, there is an indication that temperatures will begin to climb again after Monday. Winds are also expected to ease as the week progresses.
By the end of next week, the warmest parts of the UK are likely to be in the southeast, including Greater London, Kent, and Essex, signalling a return to more seasonal spring weather following the brief but sharp Easter freeze.
