Homes have been wrecked by flooding and residents have been evacuated in the village of Gwaelod-y-Garth on the edge of Cardiff after an explosion at a nearby quarry.
Pictures from the village show a heavy emergency services presence, with South Wales Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service in attendance.
Explosion described as 'earthquake'
According to residents, water came gushing through the village at Heol Berry and Heol y Nant after an explosion at the nearby Breedon Group quarry. The owners of the quarry are yet to comment.
Residents have described the explosion, which happened at around 2pm, as being like an "earthquake". Moments after the explosion, residential streets were becoming flooded with water.
Emergency services respond
A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We are currently responding to surface water flooding at Heol Berry and Heol Y Nant, Gwaelod-y-Garth, in the Taff’s Well area. Please avoid the area to allow the emergency services to deal with the incident."
There are reports of severe traffic delays between Radyr and Taff's Well as police have closed roads which are flooded.
