At least 10 people have died in severe flooding across Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece following torrential rain. In Bulgaria's Tsarevo area, fast-moving floodwaters submerged cars and swept away a woman's body out to sea, authorities reported.
Two men and a woman died in Bulgaria, with one man working on a house belonging to a missing mother and daughter. A bridge collapsed south of Tsarevo, leaving three people missing. Tourists were evacuated from a campsite at Arapya as rivers overflowed.
Environment Minister Julian Popov warned that climate change would lead to more frequent and severe rainfall in Bulgaria. In Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, flash floods turned streets into rivers, washing away cars and trapping people in a library. Two people died, including a woman swept away by floodwaters.
Three more deaths and three missing were reported in Kirklareli province near the Bulgarian border. Several homes were washed away in Igneada on the Black Sea coast. In Greece, Storm Daniel caused two deaths, with a man killed by a falling wall in Volos and an 87-year-old woman found dead in Magnesia.
Meteorologists noted that Magnesia received as much rain in 24 hours as it typically does in an entire autumn. Landslides blocked roads, trapping elderly residents around Mount Pelion.
