39 UK Areas on Flood Alert as 70mm Rain Forecast

Heavy rain of up to 70mm is expected to hit parts of the UK on Thursday, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning for rain. The warning covers London, the South East, the South West, parts of Wales, and the West Midlands, and is in effect from 9am until the end of the day.

The Environment Agency has currently issued three flood warnings, meaning flooding is expected, along with 40 flood alerts where flooding is possible. Residents are advised to prepare an emergency flood kit and check if their property is at risk of flooding.

The Met Office stated: "A deepening area of low pressure will migrate northeastwards across England and Wales on Thursday. Whilst the exact track is uncertain, rain will become persistent and heavy through the day." Accumulations of 20-40mm are expected widely, with the potential for 40-70mm in isolated spots, most likely in parts of southwest England.

Separately, a yellow warning for ice covers much of western and northern Scotland from 8pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday. Icy surfaces are expected where recent heavy snow has melted or where there has been heavy rain.

The unsettled weather follows last week's Storm Goretti, which left the ground saturated. The Met Office forecast for Thursday to Saturday indicates further rain, with temperatures around average in the south but cold in the north, and a spell of heavy rain and strong winds possible on Thursday night.
